The last time Argentina won the COPA, the Arima Maxi stand was where the San Juan taxi stand is now, Beenie Man wasn’t that big yet and Malick Secondary was ruling Secondary Schools football.
1993 was the last time the Albiceleste won an international title, but in 2021 Angel Di Maria lobbed Ederson in the 21st minute to give the Sky Blue and White their 15th Copa America and first senior international title in 28 years. Only perhaps Messi, Papu Gomez, Augero and Di Maria currently in the team were old enough to remember or aware of it. Since then they lost to Brazil twice in Copa Finals, Chile twice and Germany at the World Cup final in 2014. This was Brazil’s first competitive loss at the Maracana since the third place playoff at the World Cup in 2014. The win now leaves Argentina unbeaten since last Copa final against Brazil. They have now gone 20 matches unbeaten, with 12 wins and 8 draws.
The win also gives Messi his first senior international title, after winning the under 20 World Cup in 2005 and the Olympic games in 2008. The missing international senior title is what pundits were using as an excuse to not place him on the GOAT pedestal. Maybe now, just maybe he can now secure his rightful place on that GOAT pedestal. For Brazil, their winning streak comes to an end, the loss, their first since losing to Argentina in November 2019, they now have to start over. There will be little time to celebrate as players will now focus on their clubs, and player like Messi will have to secure a new contract whether with Barca or whoever, before World Cup qualifiers resume in September.
