‘SMALLY’ POWERS TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO TO 3X3 AMERI-CUP WIN OVER ARGENTINA

Akheel ‘Smally’ Boyd starred for the Trinidad and Tobago 3×3 basketball team, as he powered the Twin Island Republic to a 17-12 win over Argentina, securing qualification to the quarterfinal of the FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup.

The Maloney Pacers point guard scored 8 points to lead Trinidad and Tobago, who were eliminated last year, failing to get to the Pool stage. Last year, the quartet of Steven ‘Lighter’ Lewis, Adrian Joseph, Moriba De Freitas, and Naython Lewis beat Guyana but lost to Guatemala as they failed to qualify out of the Qualifying Group. This year the quartet of Adrian Joseph, Moriba De Freitas, Naython Lewis, and Akheel Boyd started in the Pool stage and qualified for the Quarter Finals to be played on Sunday.

Team TTO (14th seed) lost their opening Pool B game on Friday morning against Puerto Rico (2nd seed)21-15, with Boyd and Adrian Joseph scoring 5 points each. But 2 hours later, they returned to hand Argentina (8th seed) the surprise defeat, as Moriba De Freitas scored 5 to help his former Stories of Success teammate.
